Nigeria’s political scene is on the verge of transformation as the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate from the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, is scheduled to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on December 31, 2025, in Enugu.
This development will conclude months of speculation regarding Obi’s political alignment for the upcoming elections. Obi will be defecting alongside serving Senators and other lawmakers affiliated with the LP, as well as members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the southeastern region.
According to sources, Obi will be joining the ADC with Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central; Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North; Enyinnaya Abaribe from Abia South; PDP leader Ben Obi; and members of the Obidient movement in the area. However, it remains uncertain whether Abia State Governor Alex Otti will be part of this transition to the ADC.
Recently, the PDP approached the governor to join their ranks and seek re-election for his current position in 2027.
Val Obienyim, Obi’s spokesperson, confirmed the defection to the ADC, stating, “Yes, it is true,” in a text message to The Guardian on Sunday morning. Umeh further noted that the event will take place in Enugu and will include all of Obi’s supporters from the southeastern region.
“Supporters will come from Abia, Anambra, Imo, and Ebonyi states to join those in Enugu for this event on December 31,” he added.
Sources have also indicated that Obi, who has openly expressed his desire to be on the ballot in 2027, intends to contest for the ADC’s presidential ticket.
Elder statesman, Chief Chekwas Okorie, while commenting on the situation, asserted that Obi’s anticipated formal entry into the ADC represents a positive development that could significantly influence the dynamics and strategies surrounding the 2027 general elections.
“I imagine that he would be defecting along with most of his associates and followers. I believe that a fortified and strong ADC will add value to the opposition and assuage the general fear of a possible one-party option to Nigerians come 2027. The APC, ADC, and possibly the PDP locking horns in the 2027 democratic encounter promise a vibrant and robust electioneering campaign that will provide Nigerians the required options to make informed choices in electing their preferred leaders at all levels. I imagine that the APC leadership will return to the drawing table to map out the strategy to confront the emerging challenge. Nigerians are in interesting times,” Okorie stated.
