Former Minister of Transportation and prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed his readiness to collaborate with Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi in order to confront President Bola Tinubu in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. He cited escalating economic difficulties, insecurity, and a food crisis as primary motivations for his change in stance.
In a BBC interview, the former governor of Rivers State did not hold back in expressing his concerns regarding the nation’s condition, advocating for an immediate political realignment to save the country from what he termed as “dangerous stagnation.”
“People are dying. People are starving. I myself am feeling the effects of hunger,” Amaechi stated. “While some may believe I am insulated, the reality is that I too am experiencing hunger.”
Although he is a founding member of the ruling APC and was a presidential candidate under the party’s banner in 2022, Amaechi emphasized that loyalty to a political party should not equate to unquestioning support for a failing government.
“If the government is failing the country, you cannot simply go along because you belong to the same party. That is not right,” he insisted.
“The responsible course of action is to convey the truth to the government and to articulate the expectations of Nigerians.”
Amaechi refrained from declaring a new presidential campaign but indicated that he remains open to future possibilities.
“I have not ruled out the idea of running for president again. Only time will reveal what happens,” he remarked. “Certainly, I believe I can contribute meaningfully.”
His remarks come just weeks after APC leaders endorsed President Tinubu as the party’s exclusive candidate for the 2027 presidential elections—a decision that critics argue undermines internal democracy.
Amaechi disclosed that he has been engaging in conversations with other notable Nigerians who share concerns about the nation’s trajectory under Tinubu’s administration.
