Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger launch AES regional force

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the member states of the AES alliance, have established a unified military force comprising 5,000 personnel, modeled after NATO. This force is primarily aimed at addressing the Islamist insurgency that threatens the alliance’s member states and will be commanded by General Assimi Goita, the leader of Mali.

General Assimi Goita, who leads Mali’s military government, officiated a ceremony that marked the establishment of this unified force for the Sahel nations at an air force base located in Bamako.

This initiative represents the latest effort by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to foster closer integration among themselves.

All three nations are governed by military leadership and are currently facing challenges posed by an Islamist insurgency.

In January, Niger’s defense minister indicated that the 5,000-strong force would ‘act in unison’ to address security threats in the region.

General Daouda Traoré from Burkina Faso has been appointed to lead the force, which will operate from a command base situated in Niamey, the capital of Niger.

The ceremony held in Bamako was attended by the defense ministers from the member states of the Sahel Alliance, along with ambassadors and representatives from international organizations accredited to Mali.

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger formed the Sahel alliance after their withdrawal from ECOWAS, which the alliance claims has imposed inhumane, coup-related sanctions and has acted against the interests of the citizens in the member countries.
