Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has vehemently criticized President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of a state of emergency in Rivers State, characterizing it as “political manipulation and outright bad faith.”
Atiku’s remarks came in response to President Tinubu’s declaration made on Tuesday, which mandates that the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, along with his deputy, Ngozi Odu, state assembly members, and other government officials, will be suspended for a duration of six months. The President justified this decision by citing the worsening political crisis in the state.
In conjunction with the emergency measures, the President appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator to oversee Rivers State during this period.
Atiku accused Tinubu of being a “vested partisan actor” in the ongoing crisis and charged him with negligence in addressing the situation. He asserted that the security breaches and damage to national infrastructure in Rivers are directly attributable to the President’s actions.
He contended that Tinubu’s administration has fostered disorder in the Niger Delta, reversing the progress made during the tenure of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. Atiku stated, “The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State is a clear indication of political manipulation and outright bad faith. Anyone observing the current crisis can see that Bola Tinubu has been a vested partisan actor in the political upheaval affecting Rivers.
“His blatant refusal or calculated negligence in preventing this escalation is nothing short of disgraceful. Beyond the political maneuvering in Rivers, the severe security breaches that have resulted in the unacceptable destruction of national infrastructure in the state are the President’s responsibility.
“Tinubu cannot escape accountability for the chaos his administration has either facilitated or failed to avert. It is an inexcusable failure that under Tinubu’s leadership, the Niger Delta has regressed into a period of violent unrest and instability, undoing the hard-won peace achieved by the late President.”
“Years of progress have been recklessly erased in pursuit of selfish political calculations. If federal infrastructure in Rivers has been compromised, the President bears full responsibility.”
