ADC Begins Skill Acquisition Programme To Create Jobs, Fight Poverty

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a skill acquisition initiative called One Nigerian, One Skill, aimed at generating employment and alleviating poverty among young Nigerians.

At the inauguration on Friday, Dr. Ralphs Okey Nwosu, the former National Chairman of the party, remarked that this initiative aligns with ADC’s philosophy, focused on the welfare of Nigerians.

“ADC possesses the necessary infrastructure to positively impact the lives of Nigerians,” Nwosu asserted, further stating that while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) allocates its resources to secure votes during elections, “we utilize our resources to improve the lives of Nigerians.”

“Our goal is to make a difference in people’s lives, rather than merely providing financial assistance.”

“In certain political parties, there is a focus on internal welfare, prioritizing their own interests. However, the officials of ADC are more concerned about the welfare of Nigerians than their own.”

He emphasized that there are numerous skills available for the youth to acquire, asserting that imparting knowledge is the most effective means of empowering individuals.

Additionally, former Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, compared the One Nigerian, One Skill initiative to the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) established during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

He noted that approximately 330,000 young Nigerians were empowered through NAPEP’s 42 skill acquisition initiatives.

He reminisced that each participant received starter tools valued at N10,000, but expressed disappointment that the programme was neglected by subsequent governments.

Nkem Ukandu, the ADC National Welfare Secretary, whose office is facilitating the initiative, clarified that the objective is to empower the youth, restore dignity to labor, and free Nigerians from dependency and poverty through sustainable skill development.

“This initiative aims to equip both party members and non-members with practical, market-relevant skills that foster self-reliance amidst current economic challenges,” Ukandu stated.

He mentioned that two states from each of the six geopolitical zones in the country will be selected for the pilot phase.

“Participants -both young and old – will receive structured training in skills of their choice, and upon successful completion, will be supported with relevant starter tools to immediately put those skills to work.”

Ukandu remarked that every Nigerian possesses inherent potential and conveyed the conviction that through the programme, the party would facilitate a “platform to unleash that potential and convert it into productivity and prosperity.”

The programme serves as a flagship initiative of the ADC National Welfare Secretary’s office in collaboration with the ADC Coalition Support Network.
