Why Atiku Shunned the Peace Accord Ceremony — ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, has given the reason why the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, was absent from the signing of the 2027 General Election Peace Accord.

The accord which has become an election season tradition aimed at promoting peaceful campaigns was organized by the National Peace Committee in partnership with the Kukah Centre, preparatory to the commencement of political campaigns for the 2027 elections.

While speaking at a Channels Television morning program, Mr Abdullahi stated that the  ADC and Atiku’s ‘no show’ decision were deliberate, explaining that the party views the peace accord ceremony as a hollow ritual that has largely failed to end electoral violence and incendiary political statements.

The ADC, he said, questions the utility of signing a peace accord when it is glaring that previous controversial statements and incidents capable of escalating political tensions had not received adequate attention from the National Peace Committee.

Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate was glaringly absent from the 2027 election season peace accord ceremony, which was attended by several other presidential candidates, including Peter Obi , Omoyele Sowore, and the secretary to the federal government, Steven Akumeh, who represented president Tinubu.

However, the ADC maintains that signing the document without stronger action against conduct that could fuel electoral violence would make the exercise largely symbolic.

The party’s position, Mr Abdullahi stated,  is to see that greater focus placed on the critical issues that need to tb addressed to ensure the conduct of transparent and credible elections in 2027, rather than the performative  signing of perpetually ineffective peace agreements.
