The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and former vice-presidnt, Atiku Abubakar has vowed to return to the regime of fuel subsidy if elected president in the 2027 election.
President Tinubu abruptly terminated the long-established practice of the subsidy of oil products following the victory of his APC party in the 2023 presidential election, a decision that immediately triggered a hyperinflation that has stymied the economy and greatly immiserate citizens.
Atiku’s present stance is that the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s APC government has neither benefited the overall economy nor ordinary citizens. This is despite his previously supportive of the abrogation of fuel subsidy.
Speaking at an interview with the BBC Hausa service, Atiku said “I initially did not oppose the removal of the fuel subsidy. But now that it has been removed, where is the money? Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security?”
“If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money,” he added
