The national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, along with the former secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal, held a private meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan last night in Abuja. This meeting occurred shortly after the ADC leaders convened a national caucus meeting. In addition to Mark and Lawal, the ADC spokesman, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, also attended the meeting.
According to a source, the purpose of the meeting was to inform the former president about the ongoing activities within the coalition party.
It is noteworthy that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been attempting to persuade Jonathan to return to its ranks and represent the party in the 2027 elections. Additionally, Jonathan and Peter Obi had a meeting two weeks prior.
Jonathan, who previously served as Nigeria’s President before being defeated by the late President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, is eligible for only one term if he chooses to enter the race and is elected by the Nigerian populace.
While it remains unclear whether the topic of Jonathan joining the ADC was discussed during the meeting, it is important to note that Mark served as the Senate President during Jonathan’s administration, and the two leaders maintained a strong working relationship.
In fact, it was the doctrine of necessity, devised by the National Assembly under Mark’s leadership, that enabled Jonathan to take office as Acting President during the crisis that followed the ill health of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
