Rivers Crisis: Tinubu’s backing Wike is plot to replace Fubara with Amaewhule – Eze

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has denounced the purported scheme to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara. In a statement provided to journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the former National Publicity Secretary of the now-defunct new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) remarked that President Bola Tinubu’s endorsement of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has alienated him from the support of the Niger Delta populace.

Eze contended that the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State persists due to the backing Wike receives from Tinubu. He stated, “Wike, with the assistance of the Presidency, is orchestrating the effort to impeach Governor Fubara, aiming to install Amaewhule as the new governor.”

He further asserted, “Wike is exploiting his questionable political alliance with Tinubu to undermine Rivers State and divert Governor Fubara’s attention, solely to facilitate the ascension of their ally, Amaewhule, thereby enabling them to manipulate the 2027 general elections in Rivers State.”

Eze expressed confidence that the malicious and undemocratic attempts to oust Fubara would ultimately fail, stating that such efforts would only serve to fortify Fubara’s resolve in his mission to liberate the state from the grip of individuals masquerading as lawmakers.

“I have advised President Tinubu from the outset that his association with Wike will not only jeopardize the APC as a political entity but will also tarnish his reputation as a democrat,” Eze remarked. He emphasized that the endeavor to impeach or remove Fubara from office is unlikely to succeed, given that Tinubu and his supporters may lack a comprehensive understanding of the political landscape in Rivers State, which he described as divided into two factions: the upland and riverine areas.

It may be of public interest to observe that the upland leadership of the state has been represented by Dr. Peter Odili, Rt. Hon. Barr Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and Chief Nyesom Wike for a cumulative period of 24 years, while the riverine leadership, under Sir Fubara, is currently in governance, he remarked.

The APC leader asserted that any attempt to disrupt and abruptly terminate Fubara’s administration would constitute an oppression of the Ijaw nation and other riverine ethnic groups.

“It is the pinnacle of political insensitivity to oust an Ijaw governor due to one individual’s unbridled ambition and authoritarian inclinations,” he stated.

Eze cautioned that the ongoing scheme to impeach the first riverine governor and replace him with another from the upland region would invite disaster for the state.

He urged Amaewhule and his associates to awaken from their delusions and cease trivializing the serious responsibilities of lawmaking.

“Amaewhule and his cohort of defectors lack the authority to dictate to a sitting governor. They have publicly insulted Fubara with derogatory remarks, failing to recognize that they are undermining and disrespecting the office of the governor of Rivers State,” Eze continued.

“If Wike were still the governor of Rivers State, would anyone dare to treat Fubara in this manner? Could he endure this political turmoil? If not for Fubara’s peaceful disposition, amiable nature, wisdom, humanity, respectfulness, and easygoing character, Wike and the Presidency would have experienced the consequences of their actions,” Eze remarked.

Speaking in regards to the invitation to a meeting extended to the Amaewhule-led lawmakers by Governor Fubara which the lawmakers rebuffed, Eze stated that they should refrain from playing God and acting as if Rivers State cannot progress without their involvement.

“It is a foreboding and inappropriate conduct; a disrespect to the esteemed office of the governor of Rivers State, for the lawmakers to disregard a peaceful invitation from Governor Fubara for a meeting,” he concluded.

Fubara formally invited Amaewhule and others to engage in discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing political crisis. Eze characterized the meeting invitation as a “political masterstroke strategy,” emphasizing that the lawmakers’ refusal to accept the invitation has made it evident to the world that they are intent on jeopardizing the peace of Rivers State.
