As the lead-up to the 2027 elections escalates, the League of Northern Democrats (LND) heightens the intrigue by declaring its intention to establish a new political party.
The organization stated that it opted to create the new party to include numerous independent members from the larger established political parties who are hesitant to join a smaller party but are open to forming a new one.
However, the group indicated that it would merge with an existing party as a primary and essential alternative to creating a new platform.
This information was disclosed in a communique issued by the group following its meeting in Abuja on Thursday. The LND meeting, presided over by its chairman, former Kano State Governor, Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau, saw the attendance of 147 members.
Additionally, the group expressed its support for a National Opposition Coalition Group led by Sen. President David Mark to facilitate the transitional politics leading up to the 2027 general election.
LND’s determination to establish a new political party and participate in ongoing coalition discussions contributes to efforts aimed at forming an opposition coalition to displace the President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is at the forefront of a coalition of opposition politicians, which includes former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
In the meantime, the primary opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), distancing itself from the Atiku-led discussions, asserted that it would participate in any coalition.
Interestingly, the PDP Senate Caucus stated on Tuesday that while it does not oppose the formation of a coalition, it must be driven by the party rather than by individuals.
According to the communique signed by Shekarau and Dr. Umar Ardo (Convener), LND expressed, “We have resolved to participate in discussions regarding either the establishment of a new political party or merging with an existing one;
“Our primary choice is to establish a new party to accommodate numerous independent members from the larger established political parties who currently hesitate to join a smaller party but are willing to leave to create a new party; alternatively, we may merge with an existing party as a primary and necessary option.
“We have resolved to support the National Opposition Coalition Group, led by Senate President David Mark, in steering the transitional politics leading up to the 2027 general elections.”
The group further decided to organize a meeting of various larger northern groups, as agreed upon a few weeks ago during the ACF meeting in Kaduna, to strengthen northern positions.
“We are committed to mobilizing Northern Nigerians to urge the government, particularly the NASS leadership, to adhere to the provisions of the Constitution to which they have pledged their commitment;
“In this regard, we are determined to mobilize Nigerians for a civil resistance against the leadership of NASS to compel them to declare the seats of all legislators in Delta and Kebbi states who have crossed over to other political parties, as mandated by sections of the constitution.”
LND also indicated its intention to engage with the 19 Northern governors regarding their apparent inaction towards the dire circumstances in the North – including widespread poverty, the destitution of our people, insecurity, unemployment, and the severe economic crisis in the region, which we have concluded is a consequence of poor governance at both the state and local government levels.
