Top officials of the governments of Italy, Canada and UK pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in compliance with the International Criminal Court’s ruling.
Earlier on Thursday, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Later in the day, Netanyahu’s office accused the ICC of isolating Israel and supporting terrorism against Israel.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said that Rome will have to comply with the ruling if Netanyahu and Gallant arrive in Italy. Crosetto added that he considers the ICC decision to be wrong, as it puts Netanyahu and Gallant “on the same level” as those responsible for the “shameful attack” on October 7, 2023.
At the same time, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada will also comply with the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu and Gallant.
Later, a UK newspaper reported, citing a spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office, that the United Kingdom will arrest Netanyahu and Gallant if they enter the country. However, the spokesperson reportedly added that Starmer will comply with the ICC decision once the order is ratified by a UK court.
US President Joe Biden has called the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant outrageous.
“The ICC issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli leaders is outrageous. Let me be clear once again: whatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence — none — between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security,” Biden said in a statement.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant “shameful and absurd.”——————————–
“The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for the Israeli prime minister and defense minister. This decision is shameful and absurd. I just spoke on the phone with my counterpart Gideon Sa’ar, the Israeli foreign minister, and reassured him that Hungary rejects the transformation of any institution of the international judicial system into a political instrument, and that is exactly what happened,” Szijjarto said.
On October 7, 2023, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. In addition, fighters of Hamas infiltrated the border areas, opened fire on the military and civilians and took hostages. Israeli authorities say that about 1,200 people were killed during the raid. In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation Iron Swords in the Gaza Strip and announced a complete blockade of the enclave. The death toll from the Israeli attacks has surpassed 44,000 in the Gaza Strip, according to local health authorities.’————————————————————
On Thursday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing alleged war crimes in Gaza. In response, Netanyahu’s office accused the ICC of marginalizing Israel and endorsing terrorism against the nation.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that Italy would be obligated to adhere to the ruling should Netanyahu and Gallant enter the country. He expressed his belief that the ICC’s decision is misguided, equating Netanyahu and Gallant with those responsible for the “disgraceful attack” on October 7, 2023.
Simultaneously, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau affirmed that Canada would also respect the ICC’s arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant.
A UK newspaper later reported, referencing a spokesperson from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office, that the United Kingdom would detain Netanyahu and Gallant upon their arrival. However, the spokesperson noted that Starmer would act in accordance with the ICC’s ruling only after it is validated by a UK court.
US President Joe Biden condemned the ICC’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, labeling it as outrageous. “The ICC’s issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli leaders is outrageous. Let me be clear once again: whatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence — none — between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security,” Biden stated.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto characterized the ICC’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu and Gallant as “shameful and absurd.”
The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for the Prime Minister and Defense Minister of Israel. This action is both disgraceful and nonsensical. I recently communicated with my counterpart, Gideon Sa’ar, the Israeli Foreign Minister, and assured him that Hungary opposes the conversion of any international judicial institution into a political tool, which is precisely what has occurred,” stated Szijjarto. On October 7, 2023, Israel experienced an unprecedented rocket assault from the Gaza Strip. Additionally, Hamas militants breached the border areas, engaging in gunfire against both military personnel and civilians, while also taking hostages. Israeli officials report that approximately 1,200 individuals lost their lives during this incursion. In retaliation, the Israel Defense Forces initiated Operation Iron Swords in the Gaza Strip and declared a total blockade of the region. According to local health authorities, the death toll from Israeli airstrikes has exceeded 44,000 in the Gaza Strip.
