The recent appointment of Bayo Ojulari as the new Group CEO and Musa Ahmadu-Kida as non-executive chairman, following the dismissal of Mele Kyari, has ignited this discussion. The group contends that this transition poses a risk of sidelining other ethnic communities.
The LND highlighted that when a single ethnic group dominates critical government positions, it can create a perception of inequity. They stated, “When one ethnic group monopolizes government positions, it risks marginalizing other groups.” This perception of favoritism, they argue, could exacerbate ethnic tensions and threaten national unity.
Additionally, the LND raised concerns about the potential for corruption, arguing that a uniform selection process may cultivate an environment conducive to nepotism, prioritizing ethnic interests over the collective welfare of the nation.
The group also warned that the disproportionate nature of these appointments could hinder the equitable distribution of resources, potentially exacerbating economic inequalities and fostering resentment among marginalized communities.
In their statement, the LND underscored that this scenario could violate the federal character principle, which aims to ensure fair representation of Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups within the government.
