The Supreme Court has overturned the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). In a unanimous decision delivered on Friday, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court determined that the Court of Appeal did not have the jurisdiction to declare Abure as the National Chairman, given that it had previously established that the core issue pertained to the leadership of the party. The court emphasized that matters of leadership are internal to a political party and fall outside the jurisdiction of the courts.
The court granted the appeal submitted by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and another party, deeming it valid. Additionally, it dismissed the cross-appeal from the Abure faction of the LP, ruling it to be without merit.
However, despite the Supreme Court’s Friday ruling on the leadership turmoil within the Labour Party, Julius Abure maintains that he is still the National Chairman of the Party. In a post on his X account shortly after the court’s decision, Abure stated, “Barr Julius Abure still Remains The National Chairman of Labour Party.”
Conversely, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of LP, who praised the ruling, asserted that the Labour Party is committed to its goal of fostering a new Nigeria. Senator Nenadi Usman, who leads the Labour Party (LP) Caretaker Committee, characterized the Supreme Court’s decision to remove Julius Abure from his position as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.
In response to the ruling, Senator Usman highlighted that this decision represents a pivotal moment for both the Labour Party and the democratic framework of the nation. “The recent Supreme Court ruling, which upheld the appeal submitted by Senator Nenadi Usman as valid while rejecting the cross-appeal from the Abure faction as lacking merit, signifies a triumph for the rule of law and a crucial advancement for our democracy,” the statement indicated.
