How Grapes Help Fight Stress

Substance in grapes found to reduce stress levels

Russian scientists have found that grapes, or more precisely their seeds and skins, can help fight stress. During experiments, researchers discovered a substance called resveratrol in these parts of the grapes, which can suppress the production of stress hormones.

To test their discovery, the scientists conducted an experiment on rats, dividing them into three groups. The first group was kept in calm and favorable conditions, while the other two were exposed to stress caused by the smell of fox urine, which the rodents are afraid of. One of the stressed groups was given resveratrol daily, while the other was not.

The results showed that resveratrol slowed down an enzyme in the liver that triggers the release of stress hormones into the blood. This finding confirms that stress affects the communication between the brain and the liver, which can cause anxiety and other behavioral problems. In addition to grapes, resveratrol is also found in blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, dark chocolate, and peanuts.

Professor Vadim Tseilikman noted that these studies provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which resveratrol can stabilize emotional states.
