President of DR Congo demands end to dependence on commodity exportsby African countries

During his address at the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) summit of Heads of State and Government, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) emphasized the urgent need to eliminate African nations’ reliance on raw material exports. His remarks were shared by his office on the social media platform X.

“I strongly believe that for our economies to thrive, we must break free from the cycle of dependency on commodity exports and focus on developing value chains that will transform and enrich Africa. This is the essential step that will empower our youth to shape the continent’s future,” Tshisekedi stated.

He highlighted the DRC’s readiness to collaborate with all member countries to establish regional value chains and enhance Africa’s food and energy security. Additionally, Tshisekedi pointed out the importance of restoring regional peace and security, noting that the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC is obstructing the development of its citizens and destabilizing the broader region. He concluded his address by reiterating his commitment to advancing cooperation within COMESA and fostering regional integration to ensure a prosperous and stable future for Africa. COMESA currently comprises 21 member states.
