As the momentum towards the 2027 general elections gathers steam, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has inaugurated a national reconciliation and peace committee tasked with resolving grievances, renewing trust, and strengthening unity.
The committee was inaugurated at the Abuja national headquarters of the party on Wednesday by the National Chairman of ADC, Sen. David Mark. The committee comprised Sen. Tunde Ogbeha as chairman, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor (South-South) as deputy chairman, Dr. Ahmad Ajuji (North-East) as a member, and Musa Elayo (North-Central), among others.
The committee’s terms of reference included engaging aspirants, candidates, leaders, and stakeholders in constructive dialogue to identify grievances, address legitimate concerns, and rebuild trust fully.
During the occasion, Sen. Mark said the ADC was founded on democracy, inclusion, justice, consultation, and a handshake philosophy, which encouraged members to build bridges across political differences. These virtues, he said, are what made dispute resolution and reconciliation necessary to ensure that every ADC member felt valued and carried along.
“Our recently concluded primaries produced winners, but they also produced disappointments and grievances. These are realities we must acknowledge and address clearly today,” he said.
He stated that the outcome of the party’s internal elections only serves to nominate candidates for elections but does not determine the membership status of persons, emphasizing that every member remains a valued asset of the party.
Pointing out that the party’s major challenge was building a united political platform capable of winning Nigerians’ confidence, rather than fighting members who contested against others, the ADC chairman affirmed that:
“Those who did not emerge victorious still remain valuable members of the ADC. Their experience, networks, structures, and commitment remain important assets.”
He thus urged successful aspirants to recognize that victory came with responsibility, stressing that it was not a license to exclude, humiliate, or marginalize other members. He appealed to all leaders, state chairmen, zonal coordinators, candidates, aspirants, and elected representatives to become ambassadors of reconciliation and reject internal sabotage and revenge.
Pertaining to the task assigned to the committee, he said, “I expect the committee to discharge this responsibility with fairness, neutrality, maturity, sincerity, and confidentiality. Everyone must support this reconciliation process wholeheartedly.”
He reminded the committee members of the imperatives of genuine reconciliation as the 2027 general elections approach because, as he said, the party could not afford to approach the polls with a divided house, emphasizing that victory would require a disciplined, coordinated, and united ADC.
He therefore called on aggrieved members to give reconciliation a chance, nominated candidates to extend hands of fellowship, unsuccessful aspirants to remain committed to the cause of the party, and leaders to lead by example.
“The ADC is bigger than any individual, aspirant, candidate, or office. Our Handshake Philosophy requires us to reach across differences and build bridges,” he said.
Senator Mark then charged committee members to build bridges, heal wounds, restore confidence, and unite members, urging them to work together for the country and its people.
Meanwhile, in a clear statement of intent of the party’s determined ambition to vigorously challenge the ruling APC in every turf of the 2027 elections, the African Democratic Congress has released its official list of governorship and deputy governorship candidates for the forthcoming elections in all the 28 states eligible for the contest.
