Following a meeting of some prominent members of the PDP on Tuesday at the Transcorp Hotel in Abuja, a decision to fully join the opposition coalition against the APC government was agreed upon.
The meeting, which was chaired by former Senate President David Mark, had in attendance former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Chief Tom Ikimi, and former Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, as well as other prominent members of the PDP, including former National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus and former Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi).
Additionally, other notable PDP representatives present were Senator Ben Obi, former National Women Leader Josephine Anenih, former National Organizing Secretary Senator Austin Akobundu, ex-National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan, and former National Youth Leader Abdullahi Maibasira, among others.
At the conclusion of their deliberation, they urged party affiliates and the broader Nigerian populace to endorse the newly formed coalition aimed at displacing President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
This appeal was articulated in a communiqué signed by David Mark.
The communiqué stated in part, “The meeting advocates for all conscientious PDP members and other patriotic Nigerians to participate in the coalition.
“All coalition members must be aligned on matters concerning national unity, democracy, national security, and the national economy, as well as possess the political resolve to eradicate corruption entrenched in our institutions.
“The coalition members are to devise strategies for winning all elections, taking into account both local and national specificities.”
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has experienced both advancements and obstacles across various sectors.
Nevertheless, opposition leaders from multiple parties have consistently criticized the All Progressives Congress-led government, branding it a failure.
Ironically, the principal opposition parties, including the PDP, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, and Social Democratic Party, have been grappling with their own internal conflicts.
In an effort to present a formidable challenge in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, former Vice President Atiku, LP’s Peter Obi, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others launched a new political coalition in Abuja on March 20.
This development ignited extensive national discussion regarding the potential for a consolidated opposition, eliciting diverse responses from both analysts and the general public.
For several months, there has been speculation regarding the selection of a political platform for the coalition.
But on May 19, the coalition officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political foundation.
Previous reports confirmed that the coalition has also appointed Senator Mark as interim chairman, with a formal unveiling planned for Wednesday.
The communiqué indicated that the assembly of concerned PDP leaders was convened to discuss the alarming condition of the party.
They voiced their concerns that following the party’s defeat in the most recent presidential election and the resignation of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman, the PDP has struggled to regain its stability.
It further stated, “Vested interests from within and the reckless actions of the APC-led Federal Government, which has been utilizing state institutions to suppress and dismantle democracy, know no limits!
“The failure of the PDP leadership to guide the party according to its constitution, rules, and regulations has resulted in a disordered and undisciplined organization!
“The vision of the founding fathers, for which the party was created, and the role it played in restoring Nigeria as a stable and united nation, as well as a key player on the regional, continental, and global stage, have been obliterated, just as our position as the leader of the black race is now overshadowed by smaller and less equipped nations.”
Mark, Atiku, and other PDP leaders lamented the current condition of Nigeria, characterizing the nation as weakened and a source of shame in the international arena.
The communiqué partially stated, “The APC government, which came into being on the false and evil propaganda to save Nigeria from the PDP, is now a disaster to our nation and therefore must be voted out of power.
“All indices of development that support the comfort and quality of life of the citizens have collapsed, and life is now hell in Nigeria.
“The PDP, which is organic with the discipline, capacity, and history to lead and save Nigeria, is now a shadow of its old self. The heatwave unleashed by the APC Federal Government through threats, blackmail and patronage has forced elected officers in government to abandon the PDP.”
