Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, has cautioned that the deteriorating economic conditions under Tinubu’s administration may give rise to a unified opposition capable of ousting him in the 2027 general election.
The constitutional lawyer expressed these views in response to discussions regarding a potential political alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 elections.
Ozekhome indicated that given the current levels of poverty, frustration, and disillusionment throughout the nation, Tinubu could encounter defeat at the polls if the opposition unites. “With the suffering and discontent prevalent, a formidable force could remove him (Tinubu) from power,” he remarked. “However, the opposition faces significant challenges, as Tinubu wields control over nearly all state power apparatuses.”
He called for opposition groups to unite, characterizing Nigeria’s political framework as one that should reflect the American two-party system. “We ought to establish a model where no single power bloc dominates,” Ozekhome further stated.
Supporting his stance, rights activist and attorney Abdul Mahmud criticized Tinubu for imposing hardship through ineffective economic policies. “Nigerians have endured enough under Tinubu and will continue to suffer as he advances his neo-imperialist economic agenda,” Mahmud asserted.
“Nigerians are tired of Tinubu, and anyone but Tinubu will suffice in 2027.”
