We’re Following Atiku’s Leadership – APC’s Gudaji Kazaure

Former House of Representatives member, Gudaji Kazaure, has said he visited Atiku Abubakar to show support for his plan to rescue the country

Gudaji Kazaure, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Jigawa State, has revealed that Northern elders have decided to align politically with former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

He made this announcement on Saturday during a visit to Atiku, accompanied by several Northern politicians. Kazaure expressed concern that many elected officials have neglected their constituents and their responsibilities. He indicated that his visit was a result of a meeting among Northern elders, where they collectively agreed to support Atiku’s leadership.

Kazaure, the  former Chairman of the House Committee on Political Parties Matters also criticized the current administration for its failure to effectively combat corruption in the country. Regarding his visit, he stated:

“I came to see our leader, Atiku Abubakar, due to the pressing issues Nigeria is currently facing. All the Northern elders and leaders convened a meeting prior to this visit to discuss how we can unite our politicians in search of a sustainable solution. Many of our elected representatives have turned their backs on us and on our efforts to enhance the nation.

“Numerous issues we previously addressed during past administrations remain unaddressed. There is no one in this country who can claim that we have not highlighted corruption or discussed it. This government had pledged to continue investigating these matters, yet progress has been insufficient. I have not been contacted by anyone, nor has anyone acknowledged my existence.”

This is the reason we are uniting to urge all our patriotic politicians to come together in a unified effort. We await guidance from the leaders of Northern Nigeria and all Nigerians who are committed to the nation’s progress. We are prepared to follow their lead, regardless of political affiliation, as our primary focus is on the overarching goal of saving our country. We are willing to go wherever our elders direct us.

I visited my father to pay my respects, and he welcomed me with the honor due to a son. I am thankful for his words, as he prioritizes the welfare of the Nigerian people over his own interests. Those who genuinely care for the Nigerian populace deserve our support and should be placed at the forefront of our efforts. The well-being of the Nigerian people is our foremost concern, and we are committed to serving the nation in any capacity necessary. We are ready to embark on this journey alongside our political elders, eager for their guidance on our path forward, inshallah.

Meanwhile, former governor of Kano state and prominent politician Ibrahim Shekarau, has come under scrutiny by the PDP Northern Minority Consultative Forum for his critical comments regarding the efforts of the political coalition led by Atiku, which aims to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The Forum, an influential group within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused Shekarau of underestimating the coalition’s capabilities and strategic approach.

It is important to note that the former Governor of Kano State has expressed skepticism about the likelihood of any coalition successfully displacing President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC in 2027. Shekarau characterized the emerging alliance among opposition leaders as a mere collection of individuals seeking presidential or vice-presidential positions, rather than a cohesive political coalition.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Dr. Sule Yau, Shekarau said:

“This is simply a gathering of individuals with political aspirations; none have formally consulted their party leadership.” He further contended that the presence of well-known figures in an alliance does not necessarily equate to a united political front”

“While the coalition of opposition figures is a positive development, as evidenced by their recent meeting under the banner of an opposition alliance, none of the prominent individuals involved represent their respective party leadership,” Shekarau emphasized.

His remarks came just 48 hours after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai announced the establishment of a Coalition of Opposition Political Parties aimed at ousting President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

In a pointed rebuttal, the PDP Northern Minority Consultative Forum rejected Shekarau’s remarks as misguided, emphasizing that the coalition’s leaders are experienced politicians who fully comprehend the challenges ahead in the presidential race. The Forum highlighted that this coalition consists of influential figures with extensive backgrounds in navigating Nigeria’s intricate political landscape, equipping them to face the anticipated political upheaval in 2027.

“Shekarau must recognize that these leaders possess a profound understanding of Nigeria’s political dynamics,” the Forum asserted. “They are acutely aware of their opponents and are dedicated to displacing the APC and President Tinubu in the forthcoming elections.”

Additionally, the Forum underscored that the coalition’s solidarity mirrors the aspirations of numerous Nigerians who are dissatisfied with the current government and desire a change in leadership. It urged Shekarau to reassess his position and collaborate with the coalition in the interest of democratic advancement, rather than obstructing efforts for a shift in power.

Although Shekarau’s comments have sparked considerable discussion, the PDP Northern Minority Consultative Forum maintains that the coalition’s determination remains steadfast, with a clear focus on providing a credible alternative to the APC in the 2027 electoral cycle. They concluded by asserting that the political environment in Nigeria is primed for change, and the coalition will remain undeterred by any individual criticisms.
