Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the military leader of Burkina Faso, has turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia to construct 200 mosques within the nation. He encouraged the kingdom to instead invest in vital infrastructure projects that would provide direct benefits to the Burkinabè population, such as schools, hospitals, and job-creating businesses. This statement was made in the capital city, Ouagadougou, on Wednesday, March 19.
President Traoré noted that Burkina Faso already possesses a significant number of mosques, many of which are not fully utilized. He emphasized the pressing need for development initiatives that would enhance the country’s self-sufficiency and expedite progress in essential sectors. This stance aligns with his broader vision for national development.
Since taking office, Traoré has prioritized the enhancement of public infrastructure to ensure sustainable growth. His administration has introduced important reforms aimed at improving project management and execution. The Ministry of Housing now manages all phases of public construction, from design and planning to implementation, while adhering to rigorous technical, environmental, and safety standards.
In addition to infrastructure development, Traoré has initiated programs to tackle housing shortages, particularly for internally displaced individuals affected by security challenges. On Friday, July 12, 2024, he announced a plan to build 1,000 social housing units, reaffirming his dedication to providing adequate housing for all Burkinabè citizens by 2030.
In his efforts to achieve economic independence, the president has declined financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), promoting the utilization of domestic resources instead. His administration is emphasizing agriculture, local industries, and sustainable development as essential pillars for fostering economic resilience and growth. Traoré’s strong dismissal of Saudi Arabia’s mosque initiative underscores his commitment to a development strategy centered on education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, which he considers vital for the future of Burkina Faso.
