At least twelve soldiers lost their lives during an assault by the Islamist group Boko Haram on a military installation in Borno state, Nigeria, as reported by local and military sources. The attack occurred in the isolated town of Kareto, located within the Mobbar municipality. The assailants employed improvised explosive devices and bombarded the military base from multiple directions. Following an exchange of gunfire, the militants initially retreated but later returned to launch a second attack.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State expressed his condolences, stating, “I extend our deepest sympathies to the armed forces and the families of the fallen soldiers. May Allah grant them eternal peace and provide strength to the bereaved families.”
Nigeria has endured terrorist violence for the past 14 years, resulting in over 100,000 fatalities and displacing 3 million individuals, according to the National Emergency Management Agency. In a related incident, at least 15 people were killed and several others injured when a new insurgent group, the Lakurawas, targeted a rural community in Kebbi state in northwestern Nigeria.
