Currently, individuals afflicted with diabetes and atherosclerosis who experience compromised blood circulation in their legs frequently face the grim prospects of amputation and disability.
Researchers at Saratov State Medical University (SSMU) in Russia have devised a method to forecast the potential for wound healing in the feet of patients suffering from atherosclerosis of the lower limb arteries and diabetes mellitus. They assert that the adoption of this innovation will enhance treatment outcomes for diabetic foot syndrome. The results of their study were published in the Pirogov Russian Journal of Surgery.
Patients with diabetes and atherosclerosis often endure reduced blood flow in their legs, which can lead to amputation and disability. When both conditions coexist, patients develop diabetic foot syndrome, necessitating a comprehensive treatment approach.
To evaluate the risk of limb loss and predict treatment outcomes, healthcare professionals employ various diagnostic techniques. One such technique, tissue oximetry, measures the oxygenation levels of foot tissues.
The researchers from Saratov State Medical University investigated the reliability and effectiveness of tissue oximetry in determining the severity of blood supply deficiencies, selecting appropriate treatment strategies, forecasting outcomes, and monitoring treatment efficacy. The study involved patients with critical lower limb ischemia who were at risk of amputation.
“The preliminary results we have gathered are quite encouraging. We assessed a cohort of patients with critical limb ischemia following vascular surgery aimed at restoring blood flow. Utilizing this novel method, we have been able to predict the likelihood and timeline for wound healing in these patients,” stated Igor Larin, a co-author of the study and a cardiovascular surgeon.
The researchers are optimistic that the incorporation of tissue oximetry devices into clinical practice could significantly improve treatment outcomes for patients with diabetic foot syndrome. Further research will proceed under the Priority 2030 program.
