2027, Opposition and Discontented APC Leaders Initiate Discussions for Alternative Platform — Lukman

Discussions for an alternative political platform have commenced among opposition leaders, including disillusioned members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as stated by former APC National Vice Chairman Salihu Mohammed Lukman. In a New Year message issued in Abuja on Thursday, Lukman expressed his concerns regarding the current political climate, emphasizing that many Nigerian politicians prioritize personal ambitions over a genuine commitment to competitive democracy.

He acknowledged the initiation of negotiations among opposition leaders, including those from the APC who feel marginalized, but also pointed out that a significant number of Nigerian politicians lack an inclination towards a competitive political culture. Lukman attributed this to a prevailing “default mindset” that focuses on imposing candidates and manipulating electoral processes for personal gain.

He stressed the necessity for this practice to cease, urging opposition leaders to embrace political competition as the foundation for selecting leaders at all levels. Having previously served as the Director General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Lukman noted that the opposition’s inclination to impose leadership reflects the broader challenges facing the nation’s political framework.

He called upon Nigerians to awaken and take control of their political destiny, highlighting that the influence of politicians is often bolstered by the apathy of the general populace. Lukman cautioned that a lack of civic engagement could lead to the continuation of ineffective leadership and widespread societal suffering.
